About Juvederm
Juvederm pertains to a brand of dermal filler developed and manufactured by the Dublin-based global pharmaceutical company Allergan.
It is an injectable gel composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance known for its ability to render intense hydration and volumizing effects to the skin.
It comes in five variants and they differ in terms of hyaluronic acid concentration and viscosity. These include:
- Volbella – It is the thinnest and softest filler in the Juvederm family, making it suitable for the delicate eye area.
- Vollure – It is soft like Volbella, but a bit more firm and durable. It is often injected in deep nasolabial folds, as well as in the lower lip to give that perfect baby plump.
- Voluma – It is thicker and stronger than Volbella and Vollure, making it ideal in areas where structure and volume are needed. Hence, it is recommended for the cheeks and chin. It may also be used to reshape the nose or correct its irregularities.
- Ultra – The preferred type for lip augmentation due to its high water affinity. It is soft yet excellent in retaining moisture, making it ideal for plumping up the lips. It is also applied in moderately deep marionette lines.
- Ultra Plus XC – The thickest and most vicious among the Juvederm fillers, it is best used in cases that require dramatic results like deep lines and hollows. It often comes with a local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort during injection.

How Does It Work? | The Science Behind Juvederm
Hyaluronic is one of the key structural proteins in the skin, where it is responsible for adding volume and structure.
As one ages, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin diminishes, causing the skin to thin out, sag, and get wrinkly.
Juvederm claims to reverse or at least slow down this problem by physically adding volume to the skin, attracting and retaining skin moisture, and stimulating collagen production by the body.
Through these key mechanisms, these fillers are able to restore the skin’s youthful appearance in a natural-looking way.
Juvederm Ingredients – The Breakdown
Juvederm has only one key ingredient. This is:
Hyaluronic Acid – This structural protein is commonly used in plenty of skin care products, especially anti-aging products, due to its excellent ability to attract and retain moisture. In dermal fillers, it also acts as cushioning agent to make the skin look plumper and smoother, as we documented in our review of another skincare serum containing this compound called Vibriance Super C Serum.
The benefits of hyaluronic acid in an aging skin was highlighted in this 2012 review article from the journal of DermatoEndocrinology[1]. The hyaluronic acid used in all five types of Juvederm is the cross-linked, non-animal derived version.

Is There Anything Else You Should Know About Juvederm?
Some individuals wonder if they should get dermal fillers or Botox. Fillers and Botox are injectables that help get rid of wrinkles, but it depends on whether these wrinkles appear at rest or are caused by repeated facial movements.
For wrinkles that appear when the face is at rest, dermal fillers are recommended.
Meanwhile, for those that appear due to frequent facial movements (i.e. smiling, frowning, laughing, talking, etc.), Botox tends to work better. Botox is a neuromodulator that causes the muscles to relax.
The wrinkles will start to disappear because there will be no movements or muscle contractions that cause them.

Q: How should I use Juvederm?

Q: Does Juvederm have any side effects?
A: Injections with Juvederm and other dermal fillers may produce adverse side effects, albeit mild in nature. The most commonly reported are post-injection swelling, bruising, tenderness, redness, itching, and mild pain. All of these tend to go away on their own. Severe side effects are rare. In case of such, consult your health specialist right away.
Q: Can I take Juvederm if I have a health condition?
A: Juvederm is made up of a naturally occurring substance in the body, so safety shouldn’t be much of a concern. However, if you have medical conditions, prior consultation with your health specialist is strongly advised. The same goes for those who are on medications, especially aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen, and immunosuppressants.
Q: Does Juvederm really work?
A: Juvederm is formulated and developed to get rid of facial wrinkles and folds, no matter how severe they are. It is a versatile, robust formula that should help restore facial contours safely and naturally. The FDA approved it as the only dermal filler that can deliver not just immediate improvements, but also long-lasting results of one to two years.
Q: What Is Juvederm money-back guarantee, return, and/or refund policy?
A: The money-back guarantee or refund policy for Juvederm treatment depends on where you will have the filler injections. Most dermatologists honor their patient’s refund requests if they are unsatisfied or unhappy with the results.

Not a great product for skin problems
I was feeling like my 40-something skin just wasn’t looking as hydrated no matter the moisturizer I was using. I just didn’t notice a huge improvement in expression lines as I was expecting but did notice a fresher, more moisturized skin underneath my makeup. I’m giving it 1 star because it did not smooth out any fine lines and it made my already sun-sensitive skin even more sensitive. I try out another product and noticed a difference in my skin. I regret why I choose this treatment. Absolutely not worth it! I would not recommend to anyone. Look for something better.
